Heather McGhee

Heather is a public policy expert and a bestselling author who tackles inequality and racism in America. Her book The Sum of Us explores how racism harms everyone and how we can prosper together. It was a New York Times bestseller, a National Book Award longlistee, and a Washington Post and TIME Magazine Must-Read Book of 2021. It will be adapted into a podcast by the Obamas’ production company and a young adult book by Random House.

Heather is also an educator, a media commentator, and a former president of Demos, a “think and do” tank that advocates for democracy and economic justice. She has influenced presidential campaigns, testified before Congress, argued before the Supreme Court, and advised Starbucks on anti-bias training. She has shared her insights on NBC, MSNBC, TED, NPR, and many other outlets. She has a viral C-SPAN conversation with a white man who wanted to overcome his racism.

Heather has a B.A. from Yale and a J.D. from Berkeley. She chairs the board of Color Of Change and serves on the boards of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Open Society Foundations.
