Learning Communities

If you want to take classes with the same group of students, get extra support, and feel like you belong, a learning community is a great place to start. You’ll build real connections with classmates, instructors, and counselors who care about your success.

They’re cohort-based programs that combine strong support, shared experiences, and real community. You’ll take a set of classes with the same group of students, while getting access to counselors, faculty, and resources that are there to help you succeed.

Each program is a little different, but most offer:

  • Special sections of key courses designed just for your group
  • Dedicated counseling and transfer guidance
  • Academic support like free tutoring and study groups
  • Enrichment activities such as field trips or guest speakers
  • Help with financial aid, scholarships, and planning your next steps
  • Opportunities to connect with your campus and give back to your community

Students who get connected early tend to go further, faster. When you’re part of a learning community, you’re not just taking classes. You’re joining a team of peers, instructors, and mentors who want to see you thrive.

It’s one of the best ways to build confidence, stay on track, and make college feel like a place where you truly belong.

Students are encouraged to choose one learning community that best fits their goals and interests so they can get the most out of their experience at Contra Costa College.

Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American (APIDA) Learning Community

The APIDA Learning Community supports Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Desi and Pacific Islander students through connection, empowerment, and culturally grounded learning. Its services and community help students stay on track, succeed in college, and feel supported.

The Black Experience
Learning Community

This series of workshops, events, and conversations celebrates Black culture, history, and identity. Students connect with faculty, staff, and peers while building community, exploring heritage, and strengthening their sense of belonging on campus.

First Year Experience (FYE) Program

FYE is designed for first-time college students who want a strong start. You’ll get support as you transition from high school to college, with linked classes, counseling, and a built-in community to help you stay on track.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

MESA supports students pursuing STEM majors who plan to transfer to a four-year university. Through mentoring, academic support, and a strong community of peers, MESA empowers underrepresented students to succeed in math, engineering, and science pathways.

Puente + Puente MáS
