Strong reading, writing, and communication skills are essential for success in every college course—and in life. That’s why it’s a smart idea to take an English course early, ideally during your first semester at Contra Costa College.

Our English program helps you build the skills to express your ideas clearly, creatively, and persuasively—in academic work, professional settings, and beyond. You’ll develop your voice, sharpen your critical thinking, and learn how to analyze texts and communicate effectively across a variety of formats.

The department also offers an Associate of Arts degree in English, providing a clear pathway for transfer to a four-year university and a solid foundation for careers in education, writing, publishing, media, law, and more.

Use your Self-Placement Questionnaire results or recent coursework to decide.

You should take English 1A if:

  • You placed into English 1A
  • You earned an A or B in English 142B
  • You answered 3–5 questions with “yes” on the Self-Placement Questionnaire

You should take English 1AX if:

  • If you need additional support
  • You placed into English 1AX
  • You earned a C in English 142B
  • You answered 0–2 questions with “yes” on the Self-Placement Questionnaire
  • You’re a multilingual learner or want extra support

Both courses are transferable to CSU and UC, fulfill general education requirements, and focus on:

  • Academic reading and writing
  • Nonfiction and fiction analysis
  • Building your voice, clarity, and persuasive power
  • Developing research and citation skills
  • Writing at least four academic essays

The Difference?

  • English 1A: Standard college composition
  • English 1AX: Includes one extra unit for in-class support (more time for review, writing help, and language practice)

Once you complete English 1A or 1AX, the recommended next step is:

  • English 1C – Critical Thinking through Argumentation
Focuses on logic, reasoning, and persuasive writing using academic texts, media, and real-world issues. This course is widely transferable and supports success across all majors.

You may also consider:

  • English 2B – Introduction to Literature
Ideal if you’re interested in studying fiction, poetry, and drama through a literary lens.
  • Creative Writing Courses (English 221–223)
Focused on crafting poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction.
  • Literature Electives like:
    • Women in Literature
    • Shakespeare
    • American Literature
    • Mythology

English 1C is highly recommended for most students after 1A, especially those pursuing social sciences, humanities, or transfer pathways.
