History is the study of how the past shapes our present and future. At Contra Costa College, our History program—part of the Social Sciences Department—offers student-centered learning that builds strong research, analytical, and communication skills.

You’ll learn how to investigate the past through a wide range of sources, including archival documents, personal letters, photographs, films, interviews, and more. Courses explore different time periods, world regions, and thematic areas such as political, cultural, military, and social history.

Whether you’re planning to transfer, teach, work in public history, or pursue advanced research, studying history prepares you for careers in education, government, museums, historical preservation, research, law, and other fields where critical thinking and contextual understanding are key.

History is the systematic study of past events, people, and societies. It helps us understand how the world has changed over time and why it continues to change—offering perspective, context, and insight into human experiences across cultures and eras.
