How do you create and use an online quiz or poll if
your college doesn't have a Blackboard or WebCT license? There are many sites on
the WWW that can help, from providing the HTML or Java code to copy and embed in
your own web pages to providing free (or for-a-fee) services. Here are a few to
try.
ACTIVITIES, TESTS and QUIZZES - FREE
Exam Professor

Web-based tool for managing multiple-choice exams, tests or quizzes. The
ability to upload images or other attachments is available for paid accounts
only. Offers automatic grading, scoring and reporting. Question selection can be
randomized. Questions and answers can be scrambled so students don't have
exactly the same test. No downloads necessary; exams "live" on a hosted server.
Test management for one test is free.

Download software to create multiple choice, short answer, jumbled-sentence,
crossword, matching and fill-in-the-blank format. Free of charge to non-profit
educational users who make their pages available on the Web; other users must
pay for a license.

Create, administer and grade quizzes online. Use multiple choice,
true/false, short answer, essay, or mixed format. Allows self-tests and
re-takes. Choose automatic grading or have student tests emailed for instructor

Aimed at helping K-12 students with English language arts, math, science,
social science and foreign languages. There are a number of free quizzes.
Additional quizzes and services are available for an annual fee. The Quiz Hub is

and various reference tools (dictionary, atlas, etc.).

the resource generator create tutorials will need to register on the site and
provide a small data set.

Tools to make online forms to be used for web-assisted learning and the
teaching of languages (WALT). Generate online then save the source code to own web space, or
leave on their server and use their web address. Use multiple choice,
true/false, short answer, cloze, scrambled sentences, or mixed format. Also has
tools to make instant feedback, Q & A, translation or interactive reading
assignments. Answers can be self-checked and/or emailed to instructor.
Wisc-Online: Online Learning Object Repository

A digital library of web-based learning resources known as "learning objects,"
which are essentially self-contained small chunks of learning that can be
embedded in a learning activity, lesson, unit or course. Visitors will need to
complete a short registration form before they are allowed to access all of the
materials, but they can get a sense of what the site includes by checking out
the "New Learning Objects" area.

Generate own quiz or choose from their assessment library. Use a multiple
choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, or survey format, or mix formats within a
single quiz. Quizzes can be taken online and are automatically graded, with the
results emailed to you. Single user account is $39.95/year; 2-9 users are

Create a free poll or survey by filling out an online form. The HTML code
will be sent to you via email and can then be inserted into any web page. Data
collection and analysis is on their server. The poll is public, so design with
that in mind.
Response-O-Matic

This form processor allows users to add forms to a web page
using standard HTML code and have them "call" Response-O-Matic, which will email
the responses. The advantage: responses go through their server, and you don't
need to have advanced programming skills. Pricing ranges from free (1 form) to
$39/month (50 or more forms).
SurveyMonkey

The basic subscription, which is free, is limited to 10 questions for 100
respondents. The professional level subscription is $19.95/month for up to 1,000
respondents and provides additional advanced features (as does the unlimited
account for $200/year).
Zoomerang

Create customized surveys to email to recipients. Free basic version allows up to
20 questions with a report on a maximum of 100 responses. Data is stored for 10
days after "launch." There is also a subscription version ($350/year) with enhanced
features. Registration required.
