Computer Use Policy
The Contra
Costa College Library provides a quiet space for research
and study, as well as materials for classroom assignments and personal interest. You can
help the library maintain their services for all of its users by following these common
courtesy guidelines:
- NO FOOD, DRINKS OR SMOKING.
Please do not bring food, drinks, animals (except aids to
disabled persons) into the library or Media Lab. Spills and the insects that follow them
damage library materials and create a messy and potentially unsafe environment. Smoking is
not permitted inside any campus building.
- MAINTAIN QUIET so that
others in the area may work undisturbed.
Use the group study rooms. Keep silent in the SILENT study
room. Respect the study needs of your fellow students.
- CHECK OUT ALL MATERIALS that you take from library
on your student ID card.
Missing or damaged materials are frustrating for the next
person who needs to use them. Remember that you are responsible for all materials checked
out on your card; do not lend your student ID to another.
- RETURN MATERIALS ON
TIME.
Others may be waiting to use them. If you need to extend
your loan period, you can renew by phone as long as the items are not already overdue.
- DO NOT RE-SHELVE LIBRARY MATERIALS.
Please leave any items that you are not checking out on the
reshelving tables, even if you are pretty sure that you know were they go. A book placed
in the wrong spot is a lost book.
- FOLLOW THE COMPUTER
USE POLICY.
Short version (full version follows)
 | Limit computer searches to 20 minutes when someone is
waiting. |
 | Do not read or send personal email. |
 | Do not enter or participate in any chat rooms. |
 | Do not play computer games. |
 | Do not download or reconfigure any software. |
 | Be aware that some online sites may be offensive to others.
You may be asked to exit such sites. |
The computer workstations in the
CCC Library provide access to a variety of CD-ROM periodical databases and reference
works, and to the Internet. As the Contra Costa Community College District's Acceptable
Technology Use policy states:
. . . open access is a privilege,
and requires that individual users act responsibly. Users must respect the rights of other
users, respect the integrity of the systems and related physical resources, and observe
all relevant laws, regulations, and contractual obligations. (Board Policy 4007)
If you follow some basic COMPUTER
COURTESY RULES, you can help ensure that everyone has the same access to the workstations
as they were designed.
The library's
computers are for LIBRARY RESEARCH only.
There are other computer labs on campus for typing papers, checking email,
using specialized software, etc. Look in the school catalog for their
locations and hours, or ask at the Reference Desk. Note that each lab may
have slightly different policies regarding its use.
What does "Library Research Only" mean? That there are some uses that are
appropriate and some that are not.
| YES research for a class assignment |
NO e-mail |
YES research for a
term paper or report |
NO chat rooms |
| YES information/opinions for a speech |
NO games |
| YES information of personal interest |
NO word processing |
Please limit your search to 20
minutes if someone is waiting to use a computer.
Please exit all the way back to
the main screen (the one with the policy and icons) when you are finished. Particularly
important: Do not leave the computer at an Internet site or search engine.
Please keep in mind that some
Internet material may be offensive to others. The librarian may intervene and ask you to
exit the site.
Please do not download (or
upload!) any software programs or graphics to the library computers.

the District Board
Policy 4007: Acceptable Technology Use.
