- This is primarily a
laboratory course. Laboratory hours are to be arranged
with the instructor. You are not to work in the lab
except under instructor supervision.
The storeroom manager (Davinder Johl PS
8) will provide necessary chemicals and
equipment for the experiments. The available hours for
laboratory work are: MTW 2 pm-9 pm ; Th 2 pm-5 pm.
A lab schedule is posted on this
site showing the nine required experiments from Chapter 29 of the
text. Experiments as well as related background must be read
prior to beginning laboratory work. You are expected to
follow safe laboratory practices while in the laboratory. An
honest and continuously updated, bound, consecutively numbered
notebook will be your only source for recorded
data (see Chapter 2 of your text). These notebooks should
include a table of contents. Each experiment report should
include :
- (1) data and observations,
preferably in organized format;
- (2) sample
calculations;
- (3) summary of results, and
- (4) discussion of results
and errors in the experiment.
Lab notebooks and homework
journals are to be placed in the box on the front bench in PS5 on
Mondays. They will be returned on Tuesday or Wednesday. Late
reports will receive 1/2 credit. Expect to spend a minimum
of 5 hours per week on lab work and 8 hours per week on homework,
lab preparation and study. You would be wise to obtain phone
numbers of your colleagues so that you can call them for help.

- HOMEWORK AND EXAMS:
- Chapters 1-16 and parts of
other chapters will be covered. Homework problems for
each chapter are assigned on the schedule. Solutions
to the exercises and answers to the problems
are in the back of your text. Consultation with your
colleagues is encouraged. You are to maintain a
"homework journal" showing your effort on the
assigned problems. These will be graded and returned with
the lab notebooks. There will be one midterm and a
comprehensive final exam. These exams will emphasize
lecture and homework and will be open book/note exams.
