Course Description: A Survey course tracing the development of art from Paleolithic times to the present with special emphasis on painting. Designed for the non-major, Art 116 offers illustrated lectures, readings and discussion for understanding and appreciating the principles of art as applied to painting, architecture, and sculpture.

Student Evaluation:
Museum Assignment:30%
**4 midterms: 40%
Homework assignments/Participation: 30%

**Midterms must be taken with the class during the scheduled exam periods noted on the class calendar
Museum Assignment:
Students will be required to visit a Bay Area museum (alternatives will be provided), and choose two works of art to discuss in a 4 page essay. A list of works of art from each of the alternative museum choices will be provided.

The midterms will cover both reading and lecture material, and will be spaced at intervals through the semester.
The final midterm (final exam) will cover the material in the assigned readings and the lectures/discussions completed during the last part of the semester--it will not be comprehensive. Quiz dates are firm. Make-up test will be given only in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the instructor.

Participation includes accessing WebCT each week for lectures, films, and completing homework. Three homework asignments will be given at intervals during the semester.These assignments will have a firm due date for submission, late assignments will receive a reduced grade. Assignments will require some research and reading. Assignments must be completed by individual students in their own words. All assignments will be submitted, graded, and returned, on-line via the WebCT site.
