Review of goals for the year:
| |
- Review HPC marketing material. Note that Advisory board is not being asked to develop the material
- Refining Curriculum
- Identification of adjunct professors.
- Identifying businesses and internship opportunities
- Help structure the second national HPC conference in the second week of June at CCC.

HPC Marketing events this school year:
| |
Tom will be marketing to potential students via a brochure. Tom will be marketing to West County Unified School District math and science high school teachers, as a way of reaching potential students. Tom will be marketing to local companies to solicit internship opportunities; involvement with the national conference; and their employees to use the CCC HPC program as a source of continuing professional education. There will be a math and science HS teacher symposium to be held before the end of the year. Tom will offer every teacher a stipend, some hands on exercises and a packet of material covering:
There will also be a business symposium at the beginning of the next year. It would be great to have members of the board at the business symposium. I would especially like Charlie to talk about his experience running internships over the last few years at LBL. The goal would be to present the businesses a clear view of how we will run internships. This would include sample internship job offerings; details of the student interview process and stress test; a run down on the soft skills workshop; and the support structure in place during the internship.

Changes to the Security Sequence:
| |
Tom changed the titles and directions of the security sequence based on HPC Advisory Board input on security skills and the knowledge gained from the summer WECS Security workshop and WISE Security conference. The first course will remain as before: an intro to security which will help prepare students for the CompTIA Security+ certification. The second class will be "Intrusion Detection and Forensics" where students learn more detailed techniques in dealing with the after effects of break-in and how best they can prepare for and interact with authorities. The third class will be "Practical Cyber Defense" where students explore past and present viruses, worms, Trojan horses and other malware, in a isolated computer lab. This will better prepare students to understand how to defend based on an understanding of that which you are defending against

Questions from state:
| |
Tom received a letter from Charlie Klein of the State Chancellors office asking for clarification on several points of the application to the State seeking approval of the HPC program. Charlie’s questions and Tom’s responses will be on the HPC website at http://contracosta.edu/hpc/.
One concern Charlie Klein voiced was concerning how we amply salted our curriculum with suitable courses from other programs. Bebo commented that our students will not be able to learn to work with clusters till they learn the general material. They also will not be able to do HPC if they only know the general material. This exactly captures the heart of our decision.

|
Refining the HCP curriculum:
| |
The most immediate and important task that exists is to sync two versions of the HPC program. One is the December 2002 snapshot which has been moving through CCC, District, Regional, and is just now reaching the State approval process. The other is the snapshot we will now take. Tom believes that the program: namely the courses, course content, and course sequence are now fixed. We will, of course, continue to refine and evaluate course content so the HPC curriculum reflects the practice of HPC technical work being done in local businesses. The ongoing refinements of this year will be to augment the HPC curriculum with more details: lab experiences, teaching points and techniques, homework assignments, etc.
Applying the current snapshot of the curriculum will entail modifying or creating curricular materials to go through campus and district approval, which will also allow completion of marketing materials.
Advisory Board help will be sought, outside of the meeting structure, to finish this critical path effort.
There was concern the term "HPC" may be unknown to most of the target audience. We must not give the impression that all graduates will be working at the National Labs. It is more likely that graduates will be hired by small Mom Pop cluster solutions. We need to be sure we set the right expectation. We also talked of the many different places clusters are currently used. We talked of using a Google or the special effects of a Terminator movie as a way of clearly illustrating the ubiquity of cluster use, as well as some of the behind-the-scenes details.
We also discussed that we need to be sure to post to the HPC website the names of all students receiving either the AS degree or one of the certificates. We will also post the names on the national website. This should help companies looking for trained people, once there is recognition of the program.

Learning opportunities from the Labs:
| |
Alf did the security presentation for us that he will be presenting at SC2003. We discussed the possibility of publicizing on the CCC HPC website the relevant seminars presented at nearby government labs. We believe NASA and SLAC are open to the public, but the local employees will verify this. LBL requires an advance bus pass be generated. This is a great idea to pursue, especially for the sake of our advanced HPC students, once we start producing them.

|
Identification of adjunct professors:
| |
This process has already started as shown on http://contracosta.edu/hpc/board/adjuncts.htm, which reflects individual discussions which took place before the October board meeting and at the October board meeting. We expect that the HPC courses will be offered in the evening to accommodate availability of the adjunct professors, as well as to accommodate students coming from business.
We are seeking both individuals to adopt a course to help polish and refine it as well as to consider teaching it. They are potentially related, but certainly not the same thing. We could easily have teams of one, two, or three polish a course that is taught by someone else.
The criteria to teach CIS courses are a Master’s degree in an appropriate field, or a Bachelor’s degree plus two years experience, or an Associate’s degree and four years experience. The dept chair can also set local criteria to extend the statewide criteria.

|
Developing Intern positions:
| |
We are planning to base the CCC HPC internship program in large part on the internship program Charlie Verboom runs at LBL. He has a number of forms and procedures we will be using. The business symposium was mentioned above, which will be the culmination of the years internship efforts.

|
Revised agenda of meetings:
| |
Tom is moving System Administration and Security Administration to replace Network Administration and Programming as the topics for Nov and Dec, to adjust for planned attendance.

| |
|
School to Career Day:
| |
School to Career Day is Jan 8, 2004 at CCC. Interested board members are encouraged to both talk about their company and the steps a HS student will need to take to proceed from HS to employment at a company like theirs. It is also a chance to reinforce the CCC HPC program to these students. Contact Tom if you are interested and he will provide you with more details.

|
CCC HPC meeting at SC2003:
| |
Members of the board attending SC2003 in November in Phoenix will be meeting one of the nights of the conference to discuss workshops and exhibits relating to the CCC HPC effort. Other interested parties will be invited to participate.
