Graduation, Needs Survey, Giving Back

Good afternoon, Comets!

I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy, and continuing to adjust as well as possible to the current situation.

It’s been a challenging semester, but also an enlightening one. So many students have told us that it meant a lot to them to discover, as they faced these unprecedented challenges, how much you all cared about their lives and futures. Doesn’t that make you proud to be a Comet?

REGISTRATION

Summer registration is already in progress and priority registration for fall begins Monday! EOPS, DSPS, Veterans, Foster Youth, and CalWORKs will hold a Virtual Priority Registration Event on 5/18 and 5/19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Zoom URL will be shared later this week. Each service will be giving away five $25 gift cards, so be sure to let your students know!

NEEDS SURVEY

Please make sure your students have taken a moment to let us know how we can help support them this summer and fall.

GRADUATION

While we still plan to explore in-person options once large gatherings are allowed, we also understand that could be some time from now. So, we’re doing everything we can to make the class of 2020’s virtual graduation as special as possible.

To really make this event memorable, we’re going to need your help.

Please urge graduating students to check their InSite and personal email for a message from Envision Virtual Graduations immediately. The deadline to submit their materials is 12:00 p.m. this Thursday, May 14.

We’re also inviting all of you to participate in our countdown to graduation celebration, which will be streamed just before the event. Email videos of your memories, congratulations, well-wishes or advice to graduation@contracosta.edu and we’ll use them to help kick off the festivities. The deadline to submit is 8:00 a.m. this Monday, May 18. Videos should be vertical, not horizontal.

Keep an eye on contracosta.edu/graduation for more information as details are finalized.

FOUNDATION

Speaking of virtual parties: Dean of Students Dennis Franco raised nearly $2,500 for the CCC Foundation wrap-around fund by emulating a Jack Black dance video on Instagram! Way to go Dennis, and everyone who donated!

Many of you also participated in the foundation’s wonderful video for this year’s Comet Scholars. I’d like to thank Sara Marcellino, everyone who contributed, and especially Nalini Kale for putting it together so beautifully.

GIVING BACK

Last week, Anthony Gordon let us know that CCC art student Steven Berndt has been making delightful masks to give people on his bus route who otherwise might not have one.

COVID-19 TESTING

And, to anyone interested: Contra Costa County now offers COVID-19 testing to all residents who think they should be tested, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms.

Thank you for being an amazing group of people!  Let’s continue to support each other and check in to make sure that we all remain in good spirits as we navigate continued unknown paths.
