General Criteria for Foundation scholarships:

Ÿ    Must be continuing at Contra Costa College or transferring to a four-year college/university

Ÿ    Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

Ÿ    Completed 24 units OR 50% of your vocational program

Ÿ    Have an educational plan on file

Ÿ    Preference to students with a declared major

HONORARY / MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Created by former faculty, staff, and students or their respective families and by community members & organizations in recognition of individuals who made significant contributions to the college or the community in general.

Each scholarship has its own designated criteria and amounts as set by those who established the scholarship.

Please refer to flyer for details on the essay question(s), required materials, AND criteria.

There is no limit to the number of Honorary/Memorial Scholarships you apply for, however, you must meet the minimum criteria as stated on the flyer.

DEPARTMENT

CRITERIA (in addition to meeting General Eligibility Requirements)

Academic Skills

o      Successfully completed at least one of the following courses in Academic Skills Dept: English 92, English 110A, English 139, English 142A, Math 101, Math 101C, Math 115, or Math 115C;

o      Written statement of 350 words or less, listing course(s) taken in Academic Skills Dept, explaining how the courses helped you, and why you deserve the department s scholarship.

Administration of Justice

o      Completed 9 units in Adjus

o      Declared ADJUS Major

o      Write a career plan including a timeline discussing your career choice and what you have done, or will do to prepare yourself for job placement.

o      Applicants may be invited for an oral interview.

Art

o      In addition to the application, please submit a portfolio of your work.

Athletics

(Marshall-Teasley Award)

o      Eligible to compete in sport;

o      Be in good academic and athletic standing

o      Not have been suspended in last year for any reason,

o      Completed at least 3 semesters at CCC, unless transferring to a 4-year college as a freshman in good standing at CCC

Biology

o      Major in BioSci or related scientific field (pre-nursing, okay)

o      Successfully completed 2 lab courses in CCC s BioSci dept

o      1 page essay describing coursework taken in CCC s BioSci dept, what would be done with the $1000 award, and why you should be selected for this scholarship.

Business

(If you are not also applying for a Foundation General Scholarship)

o      Short essay on your career and educational goals

o      Submit an unofficial transcript

Chemistry

o      Strong performance in chemistry courses, with at least 2 chemistry courses completed (or anticipated for completion) by end of Sp05. 

o      Submit a transcript of work, plus details of your Sp 05 Schedule

o      Submit 1 letter of reference from a CCC Chemistry faculty member who taught a course in which you had been enrolled.

o      A concise summary of relevant extra-curricular activities, such as work experience in science, tutoring, and other community service.

o      A statement of future study plans and career goals.

Culinary Arts

o      Demonstrated active participation in department activities (e.g. Co-operative Education and 095 Catering Lab)

o      Demonstrated through you efforts an above average professional and academic work ethic

o      Essay on your career and educational goals that includes the following, What you envision to be your contribution to the food service industry within the next 5 years?Ó

Early Childhood Development

o      Essay: Describe ways that your dedication, skills and/or competence contributes to improving the quality of care in the field of early childhood education.

o      List of work experience with young children (ages 2.5 to 5), paid/volunteer, for a minimum of 54 hrs. during an 18 week period.

o      Submit 2 letters of recommendation (1 personal, 1 professional)

Engineering

o      Strong performance in Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics, w/ at least  1 Engineering course completed (or anticipated for completion) by end of Sp05.

o      Include transcript of completed work, and details of Sp05 CCC Class Schedule

o      Submit 1 letter of reference from a CCC Engineering or Physics faculty member who taught a course which you had been enrolled.

o      Concise summary of your extra-curricular activities, such as work experience in science, tutoring, and other community service.

o      A statement of your future study plans and career goals

English

o      Pursuing a degree in Composition, Literature, Creative Writing, or related field.

o      Statement of career and educational goals.

English as a Second Language

o      Minimum GPA of 3.25

o      Completed at least 12 units in the ESL Department

o      Currently enrolled in ESL Level 3 or higher

o      Statement of your service to the college and/or community

Journalism

o      Minimum GPA of 3.2

o      Planning a career in a media field (newspaper, on-line, video, graphics, etc)

o      Summary of your experience in your chosen field on the college newspaper, video courses, internships, etc. (A portfolio may be submitted in lieu of this statement)

o      Essay: Challenges you face in your chosen field

o      Preference to students who are transferring to a four year college/university.

o      You are NOT eligible if you have won a Foundation Scholarship in the past.

Library Studies

o      Essay: Tell us how the Library Studies course affected your college research and/or approach to personal information needs.  Also tell us how the research skills you have learned will help you in the future.

o      Must have taken a CCC Library Studies course earning at least a 1 unit of credit with at least a grade of B.  (Submit a copy of your transcript)

o      Finalists may be invited for oral interviews with the Department Committee.

Math

o      Essay describing your financial need

o      Major in a math-related discipline (Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics)

o      Preference to re-entry student

o      List of your community/volunteer service

Music

o      Participate in a performing ensemble both Fall 2005 and Spring 2006.

Nursing

o      Completed at least 2 semesters of the Nursing Program

o      Be a continuing student in good standing in the Nursing Program

o      Essay describing your career and educational goals

o      Submit an unofficial transcript

PACE OR Weekend College

o      Currently enrolled as a PACE / Weekend College student

o      Preference to Liberal Studies majors.

o      Essay describing career and educational goals

Real Estate

o      Essay describing career and educational goals

o      Preference to students who have declared a Real Estate major.

o      Submit copy of your transcript.

Philosophy

o      Essay (approx. 1000 words): Our Nation s Response to Terrorism.   We want to explore the human condition at this moment in history and within the society of this country.  You can examine present values, attitudes, perspectives.  We want you to then look for the larger picture of insight and vision imagining the possibilities of a more ideal, or healthier, society.  With this vision in mind, see what practical suggestions you can make that would move us toward this better future.Ó

Physics

o      Completed at least 2 Physics courses from either Life Sciences or Engineering Physics series by Sp Ô05

o      Statement of your overall academic goals and how you plan to accomplish them

o      Concise summary of relevant extracurricular activities, such as work experience in science, tutoring, and other community service.

o      Be on course to transfer as a science major to a four-year college/university within one academic year.

o      Excellent performance in Physics courses

o      Submit 1 letter of reference from a full-time faculty member of the Physical Sciences Department.

o      Submit a copy of your transcript.

Social Science

o      Major in Political Science

o      Minimum GPA of 3.2

o      Completed at least 50% of required courses for the major at CCC

o      Be transferring to a 4-year university by Fall 2005

o      List of your community service

o      Essay describing your educational and career goals

Speech

o      Completed at least 1 Speech course at CCC, earning an A

o      Competed on the Contra Costa College Speech Team for at least one semester

o      Demonstrated leadership in the area of public speaking

o      Answer the following short essay questions:

o        How has the experience on the CCC Speech and Debate Team helped you in your academic life, career path and personal life?

o        What leadership qualities do you have and how you are currently using them and how do you plan to use them in the future.

o      What would you say to others about taking speech courses and getting involved in the speech program at CCC?

o      What recommendations might you make to the current program at CCC?

o      Why are you deserving of this scholarship.

Fred Tarp Scholarship

The Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship: The Sallie Mae Fund will provide $1 million in 2004 to help meet last dollar needs of low-income students through the Unmet Need Scholarship Program.  If selected as a recipient, you will receive an award ranging from $1,000 to $3,800.

The First in My Family Scholarship Program, administered by the Hispanic College Fund, Inc. offers scholarships to Hispanic students who are the first in their family to attend college.  Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund: Community College Transfer Scholarship Program.

Kennedy-King Memorial Scholarship Fund
