 SPCH 100- Topics in Speech

.5-3 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG

This supplemental course in speech is designed to provide a study of various topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.

SPCH 110- Basic Speech

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This is a course in the fundamentals of communicating effectively in public speaking and interpersonal situations. Students will gain poise, confidence, and the organizational skills necessary for effective speaking and listening in academic, community, social, and career settings. They will learn how to analyze appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior for different audiences, how to plan and practice speeches, listen to and evaluate others, engage in conversation and interview.

SPCH 120- Public Speaking

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This course presents the principles of good oral communication, with attention given to research and platform behavior and critical evaluation of public communication. (CAN SPCH 4)

SPCH 121- Critical Thinking

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This course studies the principles of reasoning and their application to the analysis and evaluation of political and market-place communication. It examines the structure of argument, underlying assumptions, the quality of evidence used to support claims, the use of language, the discovery of formal and informal fallacies, and the effect of print and electronic media on argumentation. This course emphasizes the integration of critical thinking principles with techniques of effective written and spoken argument.

SPCH 121 I- Critical Thinking

3 units: 3 hours lecture, LR, DG

Co-requisite: concurrent enrollment or 'C' grade in ENGL 1A.

This course studies the principles of reasoning and their application to the analysis and evaluation of political and market-place communication. It examines the structure of argument, underlying assumptions, the quality of evidence used to support claims, the use of language, the discovery of formal and informal fallacies, and the effect of print and electronic media on argumentation. This course emphasizes the integration of critical thinking principles with techniques of effective written and spoken argument. This course meets the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirement.

 

SPCH 122- Intercultural Communication

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

Advisory: SPCH 128 and/or EIS 132

This course is designed to familiarize students with the theory and the process of communicating with people across cultural, ethnic and racial divides. The specific focus for this course will be development of the ability to acknowledge and understand the unique voice of people from the African American, Asian American, and Latino American cultures. Students will study theories from interpersonal and intergroup communication as they relate to intercultural communication, will read from an intercultural anthology and a multicultural history text. Through lectures, readings, films, group discussions, written and oral assignments, they will learn the skills necessary to achieve positive outcomes when communicating with others who are perceived as different

SPCH 128- Interpersonal Communication

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This course offers an opportunity to learn and apply in daily life principles of human interpersonal communication. Content is based on psychological, social, cultural and linguistic factors that affect normal person-to-person interaction. Attention is given to human perception, interpersonal dynamics, patterns of inference, listening, verbal and nonverbal communication, and conflict resolution. (CAN SPCH 8)

SPCH 160A- Speaking in the Community

.5-3 units: 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply presentation skills. Students will prepare lectures and/or demonstrations to be presented in the community. This course may be repeated three times.

SPCH 160B- Forensics

2- 3 units: 2 hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course offers intensive focus on the fundamentals of effective speaking presentations. Emphasis is placed on expository, persuasive, and extemporaneous speaking as well as on oral interpretation and debate. Students will utilize their speaking skills in intercollegiate competitions. This course may be repeated three times.

SPCH 298- Independent Study

.2-4 units: SC, DG

Prerequisite:educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.

This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Speech under the direction of an instructor.

SPCH 300- Field Studies

.1-4 units: 1-3 hours lecture, .5-3 laboratory hours, LR, DG

This course provides the opportunity for students to participate in field experience in various disciplines. In all cases, field classes will be oriented toward direct involvement by the student in some outside activity which should supplement the classroom experience.

Noncredit Courses

SPCH 852N- Communication for Understanding

This course is designed to help older adults improve and protect their memory by learning ways to maintain a high level of mental utility. Issues to be covered include understanding the process of grieving, coping with personal loss, exploring options for greater personal autonomy, and developing interpersonal support systems.
