READ 092- Fourway English

1-4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course is an integrated approach to developing study skills, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. It prepares the student for success in Reading 105, 110A, and English 139, and 142A. This course may be repeated three times in order to complete all required coursework.

READ 103- Language Skills Laboratory

.2- 3 units: laboratory hours to be arranged, CR/NC, ND

NOTE: units are determined by the level of competency achieved by the student.

READ 103 provides individualized instruction in language skills, including assistance in comprehension of textbooks, spelling, vocabulary, word problems, and study skills. Units of credit are earned depending on the successful completion of individualized assignments under supervision of a reading instructor. This course may be repeated three times for a total of six units.

READ 104- College Vocabulary Building

1-4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 lab hours by arrangement, SC, ND

This course introduces vocabulary building through an intensive study of word parts, dictionary usage, and specific vocabulary studies.

READ 105- Developmental: Reading Workshop

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 lab hours by arrangement, SC, ND

To develop basic reading skills, this competency-based course emphasizes locating main ideas, understanding sentence relationships, understanding word meanings, following directions, and reading graphic material. Checkpoint tests are required to determine competency for Reading 110A. Reading 105 prepares students for success in Reading 110A.

READ 106- Spelling

1-4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 lab hours by arrangement, SC, ND

This course provides spelling improvement through practice and phonetic analysis of words, and teaches application of basic spelling rules, study of word structure, word building, and incidental vocabulary improvement.

READ 110A- Developing College Level Reading Proficiency

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 lab hours by arrangement, SC, ND

This competency-based course is designed to develop skills in reading with emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary, and study skills, and will advance students toward successful challenge of the College Reading Competency Requirement. Checkpoint tests are required to determine competency for Reading 110B.

READ 110B- Developing College Level Reading Proficiency

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 lab hours by arrangement, SC, DG

This course is designed to prepare students to successfully challenge the College Reading Proficiency Requirement which is the final examination for the course.

Noncredit Courses 

READ 840N- Reading and Writing Fundamentals For Adults

This course will teach techniques to improve self-confidence and self-esteem, and to change attitudes toward learning. It will help students learn techniques to set appropriate short-

and long-range goals. Students will develop reading and writing skills that employ a variety of learning styles and techniques, and will work in small groups on a one-to-one format with a volunteer tutor.

READ 876N- Computer Assisted Tutoring- Reading

This course provides an individualized, self-paced CAI (computer aided instruction) laboratory for students to develop their basic skills in reading. Small study groups will also be utilized. This laboratory provides supplemental tutorials utilizing alternative learning modes and materials. With instructor assistance and supervision, following appropriate diagnosis, learning contracts will be arranged to address students' individual academic needs and goals. Enrollment will be open to all students who demonstrate basic skill deficiency as measured by the college assessment instruments or students' informed self-decisions.
