Contra Costa College offers a 2 year, 4 semester program normally beginning every Fall leading to a Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting and Office Technician (39 units) or an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree with a major in Medical Assisting and Office Technician (66 units). The program may be started in the Spring, but may then take longer than 2 years. The A.S. degree program is composed of Medical Assisting, Health and Human Services, and General Education curriculum. Clinical and administrative work experience is provided in cooperating hospitals and agencies within the area. The medical assisting courses are transferable to the 4-year state colleges and universities as electives. A grade of “C” or better in each required course is necessary to progress in the program. |

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Medical Assistant plays a key role in our nation’s health care system. The Administrative Medical Assistant is responsible for office management in medical practices and the Clinical Assistant performs clinical duties in a variety of settings such as: hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, and other allied health care facilities. The Medical Assistant and Office Technician is an interesting, rewarding, prestigious and responsible career. This paramedical field is one of the fastest growing career areas in the nation and will continue to be so well into the year 2010. |

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION 1. Be a graduate from an accredited high school or have passed the GED or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) 2. Be in good physical and mental health The HHS Department strongly recommends that students complete the following courses prior to entry into the program: ENGL 001A, or ESL Level 4 and one of the following: BOT 210A, BOT 221, or CIS 110 |

The A.S. degree in Medical Assisting and Office Technician requires additional General Education courses. General Education requirements for the A.S. degree should be verified with a counselor in the CCC counseling department. |
