MATEC 100- Topics in Materials Technology

.5-4 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG

This is a supplemental course in the materials technology designed to provide a study of various topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.

MATEC 140- Metallurgy

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, LR, DG

An in-depth study of metals, this course explores the relationship between properties, structures and applications; the effects of alloying; and the behavior of metals in a hostile environment. Students will use the materials laboratory to demonstrate the effects of temperature and alloying on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of metals.

MATEC 141- Nonmetallic Materials

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, LR, DG

This in-depth study of nonmetals emphasizes the relationship between structure, properties, and applications.

MATEC 142- Weldability of Materials

4 units: 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, LR, DG

This course explains why metals are weldable, and emphasizes the relationship between structure, properties, and weldability.

MATEC 143- Metallography

1 unit: 3 hours laboratory, LR, DG

This course provides study of the nature and operation of metallographic laboratory equipment and the microscopic structure of materials. Students will gain laboratory experience in preparation and observation of various industrial materials, as well as the production and study of photomicrographs.

MATEC 242- Welding Metallurgy

3 units: 3 hours lecture, 1 hour laboratory, LR, DG

Students will study the unique, complex changes that occur in metals when they are welded and the relationship between structure, properties, and application.

MATEC 298- Independent Study

.2-4 units: SC, DG

Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.

This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Materials Technology under the direction of an instructor.
