MEDCM 100- Topics in Media and Communication Arts
.5-4 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG
This is a supplemental course in the media and communication arts designed to provide a study of various topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.
MEDCM 110- Television Production Laboratory
.5-3 units: 1.5-9 hours laboratory, SC, DG
Prerequisite or Corequisite: concurrent enrollment in one of the following: JRNAL 151 or MEDCM 152 or 153
This course is a laboratory class in television news and video production. Includes planning; researching and writing news packages; ENG videography and field production; videotape editing; designing computer graphics; inputting chryons; anchoring on set; directing; audio engineering; technical directing; studio camera operations; producing for KCCC-TV programs and station operations management. May be repeated three times.
MEDCM 140- Video Technology
3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG
Prerequisite: MATH 115 or equivalent
Advisory: concurrent enrollment in MEDCM 110.
A comprehensive examination of the electronics of video and audio signals. Topics include basic electronics, information theory, analog and digital video signals, analog and digital audio, digital comprehension, and television systems. Emphasis is placed on the application of theory to practice.
MEDCM 152- Basic Video Production
3 units: 1.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours laboratory, 3 hours by arrangement, SC, DG
This course is an introduction to the planning, organization and production of video programs. Topics include concept development, script writing, production planning, lighting, audio, crew positions and the use of studio equipment. Students will plan and make a series of productions that will be shown on Contra Costa College's television station.
MEDCM 153- Advanced Video Production
3 units: 1.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours laboratory, 3 hours by arrangement, SC, DG
Prerequisite: MEDCM 152
This course is a continuation of the planning, organization and production of video programs. Topics include project proposals and budgets, television camera operation, audio signals, video recording formats, studio production and directing. Students will make advanced studio productions that will air on KCCC-TV, Contra Costa College's television station. They will also serve as technical crew for a weekly television news show. This course may be repeated three times.
MEDCM 154- Advanced Video Projects
1-4 units: 1-2 hours lecture, 3 -6 hours laboratory, SC, DG
Prerequisite: MEDCM 152 and 153
This class offers advanced video students the opportunity to continue their work in video production by pursuing independent video projects on an intensive, individual basis. Projects may include studio productions or field productions approved by instructor.
MEDCM 155- Acting and Directing for Television
3 units: 2 hours lecture, 1 hour laboratory, 2 hours laboratory by arrangement, SC, DG
This course is an introduction to acting and directing for televised dramatic productions. Topics include elements of entertainment, thinking visually, the dramatic script, finding character, staging the actor, staging the camera, developing suspense. Students will direct and act in a variety of short dramatic productions that may be shown on Contra Costa College's television station, KCCC-TV.

MEDCM 157- Documentary Film and Video
3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG
This is a survey course that explores documentary film and video during the past fifty years. Topics include: history and aesthetics of documentary filmmaking, the newsreel, documentary as journalism, feminist visions, the African American experience, gay liberation, the narrative documentary, docu-drama, cinema verite, biography and historical documentary.
MEDCM 158- American Cinema
3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG
American Cinema, an introduction course in film studies, is a survey of the American film industry as an art form, as an industry, and as a system of representation and communication. The course explores how Hollywood films work technically, aesthetically, and culturally to reinforce and challenge America's national self-image.

MEDCM 160- Introduction to Multimedia
2 units: 1.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours laboratory, SC, DG
This is a survey course that explores the history of interactive multimedia and its current platforms such as CD ROM, video games and the Internet. Students will review the various applications of multimedia in sound, animation, video, graphics, and authoring. They will also explore how multimedia products are developed, designed, produced and marketed.
MEDCM 298- Independent Study
.2-4 units: SC, DG
Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.
This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in media and communication arts under the direction of an instructor.
