LIBST 100- Topics in Library Studies
.5-3 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG
This course will introduce students to bibliographical resources used for research in specific discipline areas. The topic to be offered each term will be announced in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.
LIBST 110- Library Resources, Their Organization and Use
1-3 units: hours by arrangement, SC, DG
This is a self-paced, performance-based course which introduces students to information resources, enables them to locate diverse materials, and demonstrates how to use these with ease. One unit of credit will be granted for satisfactory completion of the basic 10 modules of course work, two units for 20, and three units for the satisfactory completion of all 30 modules. This course may be repeated until all three units are completed.
LIBST 110A- Finding Information in the Library
1 unit: .6 hour lecture, 1.2 hours lab. SC, DG
This course introduces students to a variety of information resources and gives them the opportunity to learn to use them with ease. It is equivalent to the first unit of library studies 110, but is a lecture/lab course with scheduled class meetings.
LIBST 111- Introduction to Internet Information Resources
2 units: 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, SC, DG
Advisory: ability to use a keyboard and a mouse, perform certain tasks using Windows 95, and understand the basic parts of a computer.
This is the first of two courses that train students how to use the Internet. The course examines how to identify, use, and evaluate online resources for academic as well as personal research. At course completion, students will have the ability to surf the net with confidence and minimal assistance.
Course is 9 weeks. It may be repeated two times.
LIBST 112- Internet Information Resources II: Search Techniques and Strategies
2 units: 2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory, SC, DG
Advisory: ability to use a keyboard and a mouse, perform certain tasks using Windows 95, and understand the basic parts of a computer.
This is the second of two courses that train students how to use the Internet. The course builds on the concepts learned in Internet I (Library Studies 111) and examines how to analyze a topic, how to use the advance features of major search engines, and knowing the difference between general and task-specific search engines and when users should use them. At course completion, students will have the ability to maximize their search results while reducing the time spent to perform a search.
Course is 9 weeks. It may be repeated two times.
LIBST 125- From Children's Books to Child Literacy
2 units: 2 hours lecture, SC, ND
This course introduces students to library materials and resources for children and young adolescents and demonstrates how parents and caretakers can use these materials to help children develop and improve reading skills.
LIBST 298- Independent Study
.2-4 units: SC, DG
Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.
This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Library Studies under the direction of an instructor.
