INDIS 095- Science, Math, and Engineering Mentoring

3 units: 9 hours laboratory, LR, CR/NC

This course provides academic assistance and enculturation into science, mathematics, and engineering. It is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year college. An academic mentor is the 'instructor' for this course. A mentor will be assigned to no more than ten students having similar majors. The course may be repeated three times so that a student stays with the same mentor before transferring. A total of nine hours per week will be spent with an assigned mentor, or academic workshops or in supervised study or tutoring in the PS 107 laboratory. A student may enroll in only one INDIS 095 section.

INDIS 143- Applied Communications

3 units: 3 hours lecture, LR, DG

This course will focus on the types of writing required of employees in today's technical disciplines (e.g., Administration of Justice, Automotive Services, Biotechnology, Early Childhood Development, Dental Technology, Engineering, Nursing, etc.). Students will gain experience in writing and editing generic and discipline-specific technical documents they will be required to write when they shift from being students in a specific discipline to employees in that discipline. This is not a remedial course. Since students will be required to carefully proofread and edit their writing, the course will include a brush-up review of basic writing issues most frequently noted in technical writing in the workplace. Students needing additional assistance will be referred to the College Skills Center.

Note: normally offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer
