H SC 100- Topics in Health

.5-4 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, CR/NC, DG

This course explores current topics in health for the health care worker and the general public. The topic to be offered each term will be indicated in the current course schedule.

H SC 102- Contrasts and Comparisons in Obstetrics

.5-9 units, SC, DG

This course updates current trends in obstetrical nursing and provides information on birthing alternatives, childbirth, parental education, and the practice of midwifery. (short-term)

H SC 106- Holistic Health

3 units (30 hours of L.V.N.-R.N. Cont. Ed. credit): 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

A study of the relationship between mind and body and its bearing upon health and the healing process.

H SC 107- Holistic Health II

3 units, 3 hours lecture SC, DG

A study and experimental learning of the relationship between mind, body, and spirit and its bearing on health and the healing process. Theories, concepts, modalities, tools, and applications of eastern and western models of holistic health will be explored.

 

H SC 108- Stress Management and Handling Burnout for Health Care Workers

3 units (30 hours of L.V.N.-R.N. Cont. Ed. credit): 3 hours lecture SC, DG

This course will provide an opportunity for students to link stress and burnout to the development of physical and emotional disease. The focus will be on the susceptibility of health care workers to stress and burnout and on helpful, useful, and immediate remedies.

H SC 110- Understanding Cancer

The biological, clinical and psycho-social aspects of cancer will be explored through the perspective of nurses, physicians, health educators and cancer victims themselves. This course is designed for all majors regardless of scientific backgrounds.

H SC 112- Drug Abuse Education

1 unit, 3 hours lecture CR/NC, ND

This course gives students an opportunity to develop an understanding of drug abuse behavior. The emphasis will be on prevention, getting help, short and long-term consequences of drug-related behaviors, the effects on family life, and recovery. (6 weeks)

H SC 113- Male and Female Diseases

1 unit, 18 total hours lecture CR/NC, DG

This course offers the student an opportunity to develop an understanding of the disease process as it relates to gender.

H SC 114- Introduction to Health Professions

1 unit, 18 total hours lecture CR/NC, DG

This course offers the student an opportunity to survey health professions, and is designed to provide a foundation for making career decisions within the health care industry.

H SC 116- Wellness Connection

This course encourages the student to develop an understanding of wellness and how to obtain and maintain a wellness lifestyle.

H SC 212- Cultural Aspects of Health Care

3 units (30 hours of L.V.N.-R.N. Cont. Ed. credit): 3 hours lecture LR, DG

This course studies the following topics: cultural attitudes toward nutrition; physical and mental health as they influence health care; cultural theories of disease and treatment; and special health problems of cultural groups. The course improves communication between the health professional, the patient, and the community.

H SC 220- Group Processes for Helping Professions

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This course is an introduction to the theory and dynamics of group interaction including psychoeducational support and therapeutic context. The various stages and processes of group development are studied using both a conceptual and experimental approach. This course is intended to assist persons who will function as leaders in a variety of small group situations.

H SC 221- Pharmacology and Medical Aspects of ADS

3 units: 3 hours lecture, SC, DG

This course provides an in-depth look at the physiological effects and medical consequences of alcohol and other drugs. The course also includes how drugs are metabolized, their effects on body systems and behavior, the addictive process, and current research. Medical consequences, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and teratogenic effects of other drugs, effects on sexuality, gender differences, and nutritional aspects also will be addressed. Required for Alcohol and Drug Studies Certificate.

H SC 298- Independent Study

.2-4 units: SC, DG

Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.

This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Health Science under the direction of an instructor.
