GRAPH 095 A through D- Graphics Computer Laboratory

.1-3 units: .3-9 laboratory hours, CR/NC, ND

This laboratory course is designed to allow students access to software packages which supplement their coursework material in graphic communication, journalism or any courses that are approved for use with this lab.

GRAPH 100- Topics in Graphic Communication

.5-3 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG

This is a supplemental course in graphic communication designed to provide a study of various topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.

GRAPH 110- The Macintosh for Graphics Students

1 unit: 1 hour lecture , 1/2 hour laboratory , SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

This course is intended to familiarize the new or beginning graphics student with the information necessary to understand how a Macintosh computer works. Reviews computer types, capacities, components, make-up, memory, systems, utilities, fonts, menus, input and output devices and some basic application theories and practices. This course satisfies the computer literacy required for AA degree.

GRAPH 120- Introduction to Graphic Communication

3 units: 3 hours lecture, 1 hour laboratory by arrangement, SC, DG

This course presents some basic techniques and skills utilized in the field of graphic arts. Course work will include learning to visualize ideas through the use of form, typography, illustration and a variety of reproduction techniques. Typical design problems will be explored, and course projects will include the development of basic layout and paste-up techniques. Topics include use of typography, photography, design methods, proportional scale and idea generation in the design process.

GRAPH 121- Advanced Graphic Communication

2 units: 1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory, 1 hour by arrangement, SC, DG

Prerequisite: GRAPH 120

A continuation of Graphic Communication 120, this course will use the principles and concepts of Graphic Communication 120 as the basis for a detailed study of typography, layout and design for the print media. This course is intended to provide training and a working knowledge of the mechanics of commercial art, and may be repeated three times.

 

GRAPH 125- Basic Layout: Tools and Techniques

1-2 units: .5-1 hour lecture, 1.5-3 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course prepares students for the basic techniques of layout and paste-up necessary for an entry level job in the field of graphic communications. Class demonstrations and practice sessions will include the use of tools and "tricks of the trade" for preparing mechanical layouts for printing. This course may be repeated three times.

GRAPH 130- Desktop Publishing

2 units: 1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory, 1 hour by arrangement, SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

Advisory: GRAPH 110 and 120

This course will provide basic layout, design, and typographical techniques applied in the field of desktop publishing. In employing the computer as a graphics tool, students will learn to create art, design page layouts, and produce brochures and pamphlets.

GRAPH 131- Advanced Desktop Publishing

2 units: 2 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

Prerequisite: GRAPH 130

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

Advisory: GRAPH 110 and 120

This course is a continuation of Graphic Communication 130. It provides additional time in specific programs used to produce original art and copy for desktop publishing purposes. Advanced layout techniques will be stressed. This course may be repeated three times.

GRAPH 140- Photo Imaging and Enhancing

1-2.5 units: 1-2 hours lecture, 1-2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

Advisory: GRAPH 120 and 130

This course is an introduction to applicable uses of and techniques specific to scanning and photo imaging software programs used as design tools on the Apple Macintosh computer. Review and application of tools and techniques in programs such as Ofoto, OmniPage, Adobe Photoshop and others.

GRAPH 150- Page Layout and Design in Desktop

Publishing

1-2.5 units: 1-2 hours lecture, 1-2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

This course is an introduction to uses and techniques specific to page design and layout programs used as design tools on the Apple Macintosh and IBM computers. Review and application of tools, techniques and capabilities of programs such as Aldus PageMaker and Quark XPress.

GRAPH 160- Illustrating in Desktop Publishing

1-2.5 units: 1-2 hours lecture, 1-2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 95

Advisory: GRAPH 120 and 130

This course is an introduction to uses and techniques specific to illustration programs used as design tools on the Apple Macintosh and IBM computers. Review and application of tools, techniques and capabilities of programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Canvas, Freehand and others.

GRAPH 170- Pre-Press on the Desktop

1-2.5 units: 1-2 hours lecture, 1-2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course is an introduction to applicable uses and technical aspects specific to software used for electronic separations and other pre-press functions on the Apple Macintosh computer. Review and application of tools and techniques in programs such as Aldus PrePress, Adobe PageMaker, Quark XPress, and others.

GRAPH 180- Graphic Design for Web Pages

1.5 units: 1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory, SC, DG

Corequisite: GRAPH 095

Advisory: GRAPH 110, 120 and 140

This course is an introductory course in World Wide Web design. Students will use graphic techniques and HTML programming to create a website. Basic Internet protocol will be investigated.

This course may be repeated three times.

GRAPH 270- Special Projects

.5-3 units: .5-2 hours lecture, 1-4 hours laboratory, SC, DG

This course is an intensive study and application of graphic skills in graphic design projects e.g., the study and application of software programs for the Apple Macintosh computer, the production of student graphic publication, or individual advanced projects. May be repeated three times

GRAPH 298- Independent Study

.2-4 units: SC, DG

Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.

This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Graphic Communication under the direction of an instructor.
