E MED 011- Emergency Medical Technician Recertification

1 unit: 12 total hours lecture, 18 total hours laboratory, LR, DG

This course covers home and street pre-hospital emergencies and first responder level care, basic anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and problem solving techniques. The students get a well-rounded perspective about the kinds of emergency problems that need attention prior to EMT response. Student needs to have current CPR Basic Life Support Certification (BLS-C) or equivalent, prior to entering this course. Grade of 'C' or better required to pass this course.

E MED 100- Topics in Emergency Medical Technician

.5-3 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, SC, DG

This is a supplemental course in emergency medical technician designed to provide a study of various topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.

E MED 109- CPR for the Health Care Provider

.2 unit: 2 hours lecture, 6 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

This course covers background information about heart disease, risk factors for heart disease, prudent heart living, and heart and lung function. One and two rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and management of a foreign body airway obstruction in adults, children, and infants are also covered. This course covers the objectives as set forth by the American Heart Association and participants will be issued course completion cards upon successful completion of their standards.

E MED 110- Emergency Medical Technician

6 units: 4 hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory, and 2 hours laboratory by arrangement, LR, DG

Prerequisite: E MED 109 or equivalent.

Advisory: $30.50 malpractice insurance fee

This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills to become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician I in the State of California. Topics covered are patient assessment, oxygen administration, recognition and treatment of various medical and trauma emergencies, and other aspects that relate to pre-hospital care. The student will spend time in an emergency department and in an ambulance to experience the field of EMS. The course meets the State of California regulations of EMT-1 training. A grade of 'C' or better is required in order to be eligible for certification. This course may be repeated three times.

E MED 298- Independent Study

.2-4 units: SC, DG

Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.

This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Emergency Medical Technician under the direction of an instructor.

E MED 300- Field Studies

.1-4 units: 1-3 hours lecture, .5-3 laboratory hours, SC, DG

This course provides the opportunity for students to participate in field experience in various disciplines. In all cases, field classes will be oriented toward direct involvement by the student in some outside activity which should supplement the classroom experience.
