EDUC 100- Topics in Education
.5-10 units: lecture and/or laboratory hours, LR, DG
This supplemental course in education will provide a study of additional topics, to be announced each term in the current course schedule. This course may be repeated three times.
Note: normally offered in the Fall and Spring
EDUC 101- Introduction to Peer Tutoring
1 unit: 9 hours lecture , 27 hours laboratory by arrangement, SC, DG
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of peer tutoring, with an emphasis on effective collaborative teaching and learning methods. Topics include understanding the responsibilities of a tutor, including the role of the tutor in the tutee's educational process, practical skills necessary to function effectively as a peer tutor, training in human relations techniques, understanding differences in learning styles, and evaluating educational methods used to promote learning.
EDUC 130- Teaching as a Profession
3 units
This course invites the student to explore teaching as a profession. Effective teaching experience and expectations of a teacher, foundations of teaching, critical issues in education, student diversity and job options are emphasized. Field observations are required.
EDUC 131- Introduction to Teaching Reading
3 units
This course introduces students to the theory and practice of reading development and intervention in grades Kindergarden-3. Students will be exposed to the developmental stages of language and literacy, and acquire a working vocabulary of pertinent terms and strategies appropriate to enhance the literacy of primary age students. Students are required to complete a field experience tutoring reading in a K-3 classroom.
EDUC 298- Independent Study
.2-4 units: SC, DG
Prerequisite: educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and college dean. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.
This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Education under the direction of an instructor.
