Major: Cosmetology 38 units

A Certificate of Achievement may be earned by completing all the courses required for this major with a grade of "C" or better.

Courses required for the major:

32 units COSME 10 Principles and Practices

Plus: A minimum of six units of college-approved courses.

COSME 10- Principles and Practices

1- 8 units: 400 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

This course is an introduction to cosmetology theory and principles. Topics covered are those stipulated for licensure preparation by the California Cosmetology Act. One credit will be awarded for each 50 hours successfully completed. This course may be repeated three times for a maximum of 32 units and the 1600 required hours for State Certification.

COSME 40- Cosmetology Instructor

12 units: 600 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

This course will be divided into the four basic sections in preparation for teaching the skills of cosmetology, actual conducting of theory classes, conducting of practical classes, and supervision of students' practices. The course of study will be that stipulated in the California Cosmetology Act as defined by the Department of Professional and Vocational Standards.

COSME 50- Cosmetology Salon and Shop Management

3 units: 3 hours lecture, CR/NC, DG

This course is specifically designed for cosmetology students and practicing barbers and cosmetologists. It covers management theories and relates each theory to the real world of salon and barber shop ownership and management.

COSME 60- Cosmetology Refresher

1- 8 units: 25- 400 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

The course of study will be stipulated in the California Cosmetology Act as defined by the Department of Professional and Vocational Standards. Topics to be covered will include: theory, modeling, reception desk work, wet hairdressing, shampoo, comb-out, hair-cutting, shaping, permanent waving, hair coloring, bleaching, scalp and hair treatments, make-up arching, manicuring, and miscellaneous studies.

COSME 70- Manicurist and Pedicurist Training

.5-8 units: 25- 400 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

This course consists of technical instruction and practical operations covering all practices of a manicurist and pedicurist, pursuant to Section 7350 of the Cosmetology Act. Technical instructions include demonstration, lecture, classroom participation, or examinations; practical operations include actual performance by the student of a complete service on another person or on a mannequin.

COSME 80- Cosmetician Training

.5-12 units: 25- 600 hours laboratory, CR/NC, DG

The course of study will be stipulated in the California Cosmetology Act as defined by the Department of Professional and Vocational Standards, and will include giving facials; applying make-up; giving skin care; removing hair by tweezing, depilatory or waxing; upper body massage; applying eyelashes; theory; reception desk work; modeling; and miscellaneous studies. Presentation methods include lecture, workshop, laboratory, and model.
