BUS-094 Applied Vocational Skills Laboratory
1-5 Units: 720 hours by arrangement, per term, SC, ND
This is an online laboratory designed to address skill
development specific to individual needs. An academic basic
skills program for adults, designed to prepare adults for job
training. Lessons use creative, motivational instruction to
correct students’ deficiencies in basic verbal and quantitative
skills. Students will learn and apply their new skills when they
begin vocational training. May be repeated four times.
BUS-095 Computer Laboratory

Co-requisite: concurrent enrollment in one of the following:

This course is designed to allow students access to software
packages which supplement the textbooks in their business and
related courses. It is a laboratory course, and each level may be
repeated three times to acquire proficiency in working with

This course teaches basic elements of the bookkeeping/

BUS-100A through I Topics in Business
.5-4 Units: 54 hours of lecture, 54 hours of laboratory, per term,

In modular form, this course provides entry-level job training for
accounting clerical positions. The nine, two-week modular format
is designed to provide intensive training in the various accounting
clerical areas. Business documents such as invoices, registers,
journals etc., will be reviewed. The focus of the courses will be on
the clerical functions of accounting. May be repeated twice.
BUS-101 Business Arithmetic

This course is an introduction to business arithmetic, including
the number system, common fractions and mixed numbers,
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and linear
equations in one unknown. It is arithmetic as it relates to

This course is an introduction to business mathematics
including banking services, personal credit, interest and
repayment, discounts, property, sales, and income taxes,

BUS-109 Introduction to Business

This course presents a comprehensive overview of essential
business functions, with an emphasis on the American business
system. Included in the course are various forms of business
ownership, the essentials of the management process, production,
marketing, finance, securities markets, human resources,
international trade, the role of values in business, and the influence

This course covers practical aspects of report writing. It also
includes instruction in methods of collecting, organizing, and

BUS-128 Human Relations Workshop

This course acquaints the student with the concepts and
procedures utilized in human relations. Students will explore
the roles which culture and environment play in determining our
attitudes, and the role our attitudes play in opinion formation.

This course presents a survey of modern retail operations with
emphasis on successful retail organization, buying, pricing,
sales, marketing, and operational control and coordination. The

This course is an introduction to marketing, and covers how to
attract and keep customers. It introduces students to marketing,
planning, research, advertising, promotion, public relations,
buyer behavior, merchandising and target marketing. This
course is useful to anyone who wants to understand how to

This course presents a combination of successful selling
principles and techniques, provides background information
needed by salespeople, and analyzes the selling process and the
relationship between the business firm and the salesperson.

BUS-181 Applied Accounting

This course covers the application and use of record keeping
and basic accounting practices to the records and reports of
small business. In addition, it provides a background of
business terms and procedures for the student preparing for
entrance into small business or for those concerned with

This course continues BUS 181, providing further development
of basic accounting practices related to prepaid expenses,
merchandise inventory, plant assets, voucher systems, and

BUS-183 Continuing Education for Tax Preparers
1.5 Units: 27 hours of lecture, per term, SC, ND
This course meets the State of California continuing education
requirement for licensed tax preparers/interviewers, and
includes eight hours of federal income tax, four hours of
California income tax and/or California bank and corporation
franchise taxes, with the remaining hours distributed among the
above topics. The specific course content changes each year,
reflecting the most recent changes in federal and California
income tax regulations. May be repeated three times.
BUS-184 Fundamentals of Tax Preparation

This course will familiarize the student with frequently used tax
forms, tax information, and accounting procedures. It provides
entry level skills in the preparation of federal income and

This course is a review of recent federal and state income tax
legislation as it applies to the individual taxpayer. May be

BUS-186 Principles of Accounting

This course presents the basic principles and practices of
accounting, including the accounting cycle, closing procedures, and
statement preparation. Elementary concepts of accounting theory
and selected problems in accounting will be covered. This course

BUS-187 Principles of Accounting

BUS-188 Accounting Applications on Microcomputer
1.5 Units: 9 hours of lecture, 36 hours of laboratory, per term,

This course provides the student with hands-on experience in
integrated accounting on the microcomputer. The application
package includes accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll
and financial statements. The course uses a Windows based
accounting software, such as QuickBooks. Accounting principles

This course presents information on how to start, run, or expand
a small business, and includes analysis of location, equipment,
financing, cost control, credit management, merchandising, and

BUS-192 Principles of Bank Operation

This course is a comprehensive introduction to the diversified
services and operations of the banking industry; evaluation of U.S.
banking, bank depositor relationships, marketing, bank deposit,

Starting a Business

BUS-200 Contemporary Issues in Business

in the financial press during the semester the course is being
offered. The course will integrate theories and concepts from
other business and economics courses as they apply to actual
business events and situations. The specific topics covered
change each time the course is offered. Guest lectures and field

BUS-223 Total Quality Management
3 Units: 3 hours of lecture, per week, LR, DG
This course is an introduction to Total Quality Management
(TQM). Students who have had the basic courses in management
will be familiar with the various theories of TQM. This course
focuses on fundamentals of basic principles and methods
associated with total quality management. The course shows
students how TQM principles and methods have been put into
effect in a variety of organizations. The course illustrates the
relationship between TQM principles and the theories and model
studies in management courses. Not repeatable.

This course presents statistical tools necessary for problem
solving in business and the social sciences. Topics will include
measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability

This course covers classes of securities, the stock exchange,
sources of financial information, points to consider in making

This course introduces the fundamentals of financial decision
making, presents the complexities of the financial world, and

This course presents basic principles of business law leading to
solution of legal problems of the business person, covering

This course explores travel agent requirements for entry level
employment. In depth training of reservations, sales techniques,
ticketing, day to day operation of an agency, tour documents,
