Business Office Technology Course Descriptions
BOT-095A-D Computer Laboratory
.2-3 Units: 10.8-162 hours of laboratory, per term, SC, ND
This course is designed to allow students access to Business Office Technology equipment during hours other than regularly scheduled class hours. Students may utilize equipment for skill building, typing assignments, or make-up work. This class is designed for an extra practice lab, not as an instructional class. May be repeated three times.
BOT-099 Occupational Work Experience
1-4 Units: 18 to 72 hours of work experience, per term, LR, DG, CSU
Prerequisite: Employment in career-related field.
For more information on this course, refer to Cooperative Education. Units are determined by number of hours worked.
This course offers on-the-job learning experiences for employed students, whether paid or volunteer, in cooperation with their employers. If students' career goals are directly related to their work experience, they can earn up to four units per term. Students must be enrolled in at least seven units, including their cooperative education units (proportionately fewer in summer session). May be repeated three times.
BOT-100 Topics in Business Office Technology
.5-4 Units: 9-72 hours of lecture and/or 27-216 hours of laboratory, per term, CR/NC, DG. CSU
This course covers topics in Business Office Technology. Topics will be chosen to supplement and serve as additions to current offerings in the area, and will be announced each term in the current schedule of classes. May be repeated nine times.
BOT-118 Basic Communication Skills for Business
3 Units: 54 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG
This beginning course develops basic transcription skills for producing mailable copy from various input media: longhand, typewritten, rough draft, shorthand dictation, and machine dictation. Not repeatable.
BOT-120 Business Office Technician
12 Units: 90 hours of lecture, 378 hours of laboratory, per term, SC, DG
This course will provide coverage and integration of business skills, develop critical-thinking and problem solving skills, and establish a foundation in business procedures. The course will provide students with an understanding of the duties of a business office technician, to include organization and time management, records management, meeting and travel planning, and reprographics. The six components of this course were designed to be completed in 18 weeks based on 6 hours per day, 30 hours per week in class attendance. Students will receive a Certificate of Completion upon completing all six components of the course. Not repeatable.
BOT-122 Electronic 10-KEY Calculation
2 Units: 36 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG, CSU
This course develops skills in operating display, printing and electronic calculators, and the computer numeric pad, and applying the principles of mathematics used on the job and for personal needs. May be repeated once.
BOT-140 Records Management
3 Units: 54 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG, CSU
Records Management combines the specific concepts of records administration with basic management principles. This competency-based course includes the criteria by which records are created, classified, stored, retrieved, retained, transferred, and archived or disposed of. Procedures for the operations and control of manual, mechanical, and magnetic storage systems are explained. Principles for the selection of equipment and supplies are included. Career opportunities in records management are explored in depth. Not repeatable.
BOT-209 Keyboarding for Computer Users
.5 Unit: 9 hours of lecture, 18 hours of laboratory, per term, SC, DG
This course offers basic keyboarding (typing) instruction on the computer keyboard. The emphasis is on learning how to key with speed and accuracy using the touch system. Not repeatable.
BOT-210A Keyboard Skills Through Word Processing
2 Units: 36 hours of lecture, 18 hours of laboratory, per term, SC, DG, CSU
Satisfies computer literacy requirements for graduation.
This course is designed for the student to learn to key (type) using the touch system on a computer keyboard. Instruction includes basic operating systems commands, basic word processing commands, and correct formats for correspondence and reports. Not repeatable.
BOT-221A Word/Information Processing: Beginning Applications
(Microsoft Applications ™)
3 Units: 36 hours of lecture, 72 hours of laboratory, per term, SC, DG, CSU
Prerequisite: BOT 210A with a minimum grade of "C".
This hands-on course is designed to introduce PC operations and the creation of documents using a popular word processing software package. Emphasis is on power keyboarding and basic functions of formatting, editing, and printing documents as well as using special features for document enhancement. May be repeated three times.
BOT-223 Word Processing: Applications (software)
1 Unit: 18 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG, CSU
Prerequisite: BOT 221A, CIS 135, and ability to type 40 WPM Normally offered as a 9-week course.
This course is designed for the student to use word processing software to prepare and edit text on a microcomputer. Topics covered will include cursor movement, deletion, insertion, moving text, cut and paste, and other word processing functions. See current schedule for software being used. May be repeated three times.
BOT-243 General Office Procedures
3 Units: 54 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG, CSU
This course provides experience and training in the many and varied duties essential to success as a general office employee. Such duties include telephone and receptionist duties; handling the mail; use of banking services; maintenance of supplies; files management; and planning business travel, meetings, and conferences. Not repeatable.
BOT-248 Business Correspondence
3 Units: 54 hours of lecture, per term, SC, DG, CSU
This course presents the principles of effective business communication, with extensive practice in planning, writing, and revising for conciseness, readability, emphasis and tone. Students explore methods of collecting, organizing, and interpreting information for both oral and written reports. A variety of written and oral assignments are presented with emphasis on a final written report. This course meets the English composition requirement for graduation. Not repeatable.
BOT-298 Independent Study
.2-4 Units: 3.6-72 hours of independent study, per term, LR, DG, CSU
Prerequisite: Educational contract of study signed by an instructor, department chair and senior dean of instruction. Topics must extend beyond regular course offerings.
This course is designed for selected students to pursue independent study in Business Office Technology under the direction of an instructor. May be repeated nine times. |
