Application Process [top]

All science (biological, physical, environmental and computer science), mathematics, engineering and technology students are welcome to participate in our program.

The application process is simple. Start with filling out the application. You can either pick it up from our office in Physical Science 109 (PS 109) or download it here . Please, type or write legibly so that we can read it easily and provide a valid email address since we do most of our communication via emails.

Once the application is filled out, either drop it in our office or send it by email. We will then send you the instruction for your next steps. You may also go ahead submit all required documents (see below) along with the application.

Our funding agency, the National Science Foundation, requires all scholarship recipients be eligible for financial aid (fee waiver, BOG, etc). If you have never applied for Financial Aid, we encourage you to apply. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at CCC or go to the FAFSA website and complete the application online.

If you do not qualify for Financial Aid, you are still welcome to participate in the program and receive all academic benefits without receiving the scholarships. You may want to submit a personal statement along with the application so we can help you better.

Completing the Application Package [top]

In order to receive scholarship, students must provide us with the following documents:

  • A registration statement from the Admissions & Records Office indicating that you are enrolled fulltime at CCC (you may include your enrollment in the 3 unit INDIS 095 mentoring class to make up the twelve units).
  • A copy of your unofficial transcript, which you may print it from Web Advisor.
  • A proof of Fee Waiver and/or Financial Aid Eligibility. You can obtain it from Web Advisor , look under the Financial Aid section, My Financial Aid for Current Year.
  • A letter of recommendation from a science, technology or math professor or an academic counselor. It can be emailed to us.
  • A complete Educational Plan obtained from CCC counselors.
  • A one-two page personal statement telling us about yourself, your educational goal and career aspiration.

As soon as the application package is completed, it will be reviewed and you will be notified of our decision.

After you are accepted [top]

To become an official scholarship recipient you should sign the contract , which is an agreement between the student and the Center for Science Excellence.
As soon as you are accepted, you may start participation in CSE activities:

  • Sign up for mentoring class INDIS-095 which is on Fridays from 2 to 5 pm. Depending on your major we can help you to choose the right mentor.
  • Fill out the academic schedule for current semester (forms are also available in PS 109 on the table) and select a two hour time window when you will be tutoring. You choose the subject(s) you are comfortable tutoring.
  • Start recording your CSE hours. When you are doing your CSE hours, please fill the form in the big white binder on the table in PS109. Study hours, seminars, study sessions and field trips are counted towards 9 hours per week.
  • Attend study sessions (if available) and seminars usually on Fridays in lieu of mentor meetings).

We look forward to see you participating in our program. If you have any questions about application process, feel free to contact us.
