What are the pre-requisites to the nursing program?

Do I have to complete them before applying to the program?
Priority is given to those who have completed all prerequisites.
If space is available after accepting those with all pre requisites completed, we will accept those with:
All Group A completed and one missing in Group B and
if space is still available, we will accept applications with two missing from Group B.
All pre requisites must be completed by
graduation

How do I apply to the program? When do you accept applications? When/how will I know if I'm accepted?
Application forms can be obtained from the Admissions Department (510-235-7800 ext. 4 212.) and are accepted from October 1-Feb 1 for the following Fall. >>Nursing Program Application form.
You will receive notification of acceptance in mid April.
The nursing department will hold a Welcome
Reception for all newly accepted in early May.
The program is 2 years.
Can I work while attending CCC Nursing?
Working is a choice and often a necessity. The
nursing program is a full time, demanding one. It is best to try to
plan a minimum of outside employment during the nursing program.
When I complete the program, what are my options?
There are many options for a Registered Nurse
following graduation. Upon successful passing of State Board Exams, a
graduate can work in acute care, home health, outpatient settings,
and specialty areas like, Obstetrics, Pediatrics or Psychiatric
nursing. Advanced Education offers more choices, for example nursing
education or clinical specialist.
Does this give me an A.S. degree from the college?
Completion of the nursing program and degree requirements will make a student eligible for an Associate Degree.
If a student has a degree when entering the
nursing program, an Associate Degree is optional.
I'm a Certified Nursing Assistant, how can I become an RN?
Being a CNA is an advantage for the student
entering the nursing program. A CNA has the same requirements as any
other applicant.
I'm a Medical Assistant, can I enter the RN class?
A medical assistant has the same requirements as any other applicant.
Knowledge acquired during a medical assistant
program can be beneficial for the nursing program.
Is there a study support group?
Faculty strongly recommend study groups and they
are a major part of most student's study program. Studies have found
that study groups have a positive impact on successful completion of
the nursing program.
What educational expenses might I expect during your program?
The costs of the nursing program include tuition, books, uniforms, fees for a CPR class and background check, annual physical exam and immunizations, a few supplies (for example, a stethoscope and a watch), and transportation costs. After graduation, there is a fee to apply for the licensure exam (NCLEX-RN).
The estimated cost of the nursing program is approximately $3500, although individual costs may vary considerably.
I'm currently enrolled in a nursing program at another Community College. How can I transfer to your program?
To transfer from another nursing program, you need
to write a letter of request to the Admissions Committee of the
Nursing Department, AA113. Be sure your phone number is in the
letter. You will be called to make an appointment with the committee
to discuss where you will best fit in the nursing program. You will
need to bring a copy of your unofficial transcripts for the
interview.
I am a nursing student at another college. Can I transfer to CCC and get credit for the Drug Dosage Calculation course I have already taken?
If the Drug Dosage Calculation course is 2 units
and is equivalent in content to N205 at CCC, it will be accepted.

I'm an LVN. What is required to get into the RN program? Do you have a "fast-track" program for LVN to RN?
At this time, there is an advanced placement option for LVN'S. The nursing department is currently studying a fast track option and this will be published when it is finalized.

I already have a Baccalaureate degree. What do I need to get into the ADN (Associate Degree Nursing) program.
A student with a Baccalaureate degree will need all the pre requisites required for the Nursing Program.

This is an option for LVN's. An LVN who requests
the 30 unit option needs Microbiology and Drug Dosage Calculation pre
requisites and is required to complete Psychiatric Nursing-N260 and
Advanced Medical Surgical-Gerontology Nursing- N275. This individual
is not considered a graduate of the Registered Nursing Program and is
limited to practice in California.
What is the drug dosage calculation requirement?
This course is a pre requisite to the nursing program. The course
consists of mathematics related problems and calculations that will be required
as part of the role and responsibility of the Registered Nurse. After successful
completion of this course, the student will be required to pass a DDC competency
test at the beginning of each clinical rotation. All students enrolled in the
nursing program must take DDC. This includes LVN, Transfer and BRN students. Please
contact the Director of the Nursing Program for information and questions regarding
challenging DDC..
Does Contra Costa nursing program have a waiting list?
No, at this time there is no waiting list.
Where will I be going for clinical experience in the nursing program?
Nursing students will use many area hospitals and
outpatient settings for clinical experience.
Will I work all three shifts as a nursing student?
Experience will be limited to the day and evening
shift. In the fourth semester, during the Preceptorship, there is a
possibility of working any of the three shifts depending on the
schedule of the Preceptor.
What kind of a uniform will I need?
There is a Contra Costa College student uniform that is required.
There will be a scheduled date for uniform
fitting.
