CCC Awarded $382,500 Grant to Better Serve Justice-Involved Individuals

Contra Costa College has been awarded a sizable grant to create a Rising Scholars pathway for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. The grant will allow CCC to better engage with and serve justice-involved individuals at every step of the student journey.

The college will offer informational workshops to currently incarcerated individuals that help them understand financial aid and enroll in classes that transfer to four-year universities. It will also work with local law enforcement, probation and adult education agencies to identify other potential students impacted by the justice system.

For those who need to complete a GED or High School Diploma courses not normally offered at the college, CCC will partner with the Adult Education Consortium, the County Office of Education and the West County Adult School.

New students will receive individual support throughout the enrollment and onboarding process, and a program coordinator will connect them with essential student services and learning communities to help support their success in transitioning out of incarceration and into careers or four-year colleges.

“I am beyond thrilled,” says Senior Academic and Student Services Manager Mariah Bruce, “That we have been awarded these funds to help us better serve our community members who have been impacted by the system. We look forward to working with our partners to make the most of this opportunity for our community.”

Dean of Workforce and Economic Development Evan Decker added:

“I’m overjoyed for Contra Costa College and the West Contra Costa Community to receive this state funding. This grant will enhance current services and support the development of education and training pathways for justice system involved individuals. The pursuit of quality education, personal growth, living wage jobs and financial stability for all of our community members is at the core of Contra Costa College’s mission.”
