ONLINE COURSES
An online course enables students with access to a computer and the Internet to take college credit courses at a time and pace that fits their own schedules. Just as in traditional on-campus courses, there are reading and writing assignments, tests, and transferable unit credits. The big differences are in the delivery of the course content and in the ways students interact with their instructor and each other.
Most online courses use a combination of text and image files, taking advantage of hypertext to make the experience more interactive. Some courses add audio and/or video files to the mix. Some courses may require one or more on-campus meetings, but for the most part, students and instructor communicate through email, bulletin boards and/or chat rooms.
Online courses offer busy people the opportunity to take college courses. But they are not for everyone. Take a self-assessment test to see if distance learning will work for you.

Before you enroll in an online course, you should evaluate your level of comfort and skills with a computer.

Students in an online course are expected to have a basic understanding of computer usage, know how to access the Internet and how to send and receive email. Some online courses may require that students also know how to use a word processing program, send attachments via email and know how to download software or documents. If you need to "brush up" your skills, consider enrolling in one of the college's short-term computer and/or Internet skills development courses.
