New Student Steps to Success

How to become a student at CCC:

Step 1 - Admissions Application (Room SSC 115 )

You must file an Application for Admissions online at www.contracosta.edu Look for this icon Online Admissions in the upper left corner of the campus webpage. Limited paper copies are available in the Office of Admissions and Records ( SSC Room115) and in the printed course schedule of classes. Please note: YOU MUST have an application on file PRIOR to taking the assessment and attending orientation.

Step 2 - Complete Assessment (SSC 104 )

Assessment of new students is required in the areas of reading, writing, and math (see exemptions on the back page). Contra Costa College uses COMPASS, a computerized assessment, for placement into English, reading, math and ESL (English as a Second Language) courses. The test is un-timed and is only open to students who have submitted their application and intend to enroll at Contra Costa College. COMPASS is available to take on a drop-in basis at the college Assessment Center. Students taking the COMPASS/ESL must also complete a 30 minute writing assessment.

Step 3 - On-line Orientation

Orientation is designed to provide you with a wealth of information on Contra Costa College policies, procedures, programs, and support services that will assist you in setting up a path to success. The orientation takes approximately one hour. To complete the online orientation click the icon on the www.contracosta.edu webpage located in the upper left corner. You can complete the online orientation at home or in the Assessment Center immediately following your assessment. You are required to print a certificate to verify your successful completion of the on-line orientation and answer a few questions. This verification can be hand delivered to Counseling in SSC 108 or faxed to (510) 235-5819.

In Person Orientations will be offered on a limited basis. Please the Counseling Office ext. 7255 for the specific dates, times and locations.

Step 4 - Sign-up to meet with a Counselor (SSC 108 )

All new students must complete steps 1 thru 3 prior to meeting with a counselor.

Sign up for a counseling appointment by:

Using the SARS TRAK System located on the counter in the counseling office SSC 108 or in the assessment center SSC 104 or Calling (510) 235-7800 ext. 7255

During the counseling session you will:

Receive your COMPASS/ESL assessment results

Learn how to use the catalog & schedule

Select courses for the upcoming semester

Note: During the peak registration period most counseling will be conducted in a group format.

Step 5 - Complete Registration (On-line, Telephone)

New students must complete steps 1 thru 4 (unless exempt) prior to enrolling in classes. There are two ways to register for classes: online or by phone.

To register online or by phone you must know your:

Student ID Number

Six digit birthday e.g. Sept. 05, 1985 is 090585

For online registration go to www.contracosta.edu and click this icon Online Registrationin the upper left corner of the campus webpage. Your Web Advisor username is the first initial of your first name, your last name and the last three digits of your Student ID number and your initial password is your six digit birthday (mmddyy). Example:      

jsmith567 username

080282 password

For phone registration call the automated telephone registration system available from 6:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. at (866) 370-9100 or 9000 or 9055.

Registration Labs are located in room SSC 104 . Obtain registration dates and times in the Counseling Department located in room SSC 108 or call Ext 7255.

Registration Exception

In person registration is only available for students who meet the following criteria

You are providing documentation to waive a prerequisite block or You are currently attending high school

 

Important Information

Matriculation Exemptions

All new students working toward a degree, certificate or transfer, or are undecided about their career goals are expected to participate in the matriculation process (assessment, orientation, and counseling/program planning) unless exempt as noted below.

  • You have completed at least 15 units of coursework at another college and have taken English and math courses (must provide transcript).
  • You hold an Associate Degree or higher.
  • You are taking 6 units or less of coursework with no prerequisites, and for personal enrichment only.
  • You have completed the matriculation process at another college and you wish to waive your right to participate.
  • Students taking the ESL Assessment are not required to take the math assessment.

Waiver forms are available through the Office of Admissions and Records or the Counseling Center, and must be signed by appropriate college personnel.

Campus parking regulations are enforced Monday-Friday during regular terms. If you plan to park on campus during this time, you may purchase a daily parking permit for $2.00 (eight quarters) to park in any student lot.

Campus Tour

Campus tours are offered by the Student Life Center. For more information about tour dates and times, please call the Student Life Center at (510) 235-7800 extension 4237. Tours will only take place if there are sign-ups at least 24 hours in advance and they are not given during rainy weather
