    Curriculum Instruction Committee (CIC)

    CURRICULUM APPROVAL PROCESS

    CIC FORMS

All new courses need the approval of the College Instruction Committee (CIC) and the District Board of Governors (BOG) before they can be offered. These approvals do not, however, guarantee automatic inclusion in the college catalog in all desired categories. Some categories (such as those listed below) may require additional approvals from outside the college.
Courses in a new program major must be approved by the State Chancellor's Office.
Courses designed to transfer to four-year institutions as fulfilling a transfer General Education (GE) or transfer major requirement must be specifically articulated before they can appear in the catalog listings for CSU, UC (all), UC (Berkeley), or IGETC.
    Instructor steps:
    1. Develop new course & outline goals and content.
    2. Discuss proposed course within department to assess placement in curriculum (fits needs/objectives of new requirements, of students, community group, industry, other interest group).
    3. Consult with other departments and division chairs for possible conflict in content.
    4. Fill out appropriate course proposal form(s).
    5. Present new course to Division Instruction Committee (DIC) for approval.
    6. Submit to Division Chair for review and approval.
    7. Submit course proposal to Instruction Office.
    a) CIC Proposal Review Committee will examine proposal(s)before placing on CIC agenda for committee discussion.
    (1) If minor corrections/additions needed, instructor will be notified in time to correct/add before CIC meeting.
    (2) If major corrections needed, proposal will be sent back to instructor/DIC.
    b) Present course to CIC for discussion/approval.
    Make corrections/modifications as directed.
    Campus/District Steps:
    8. The CIC-approved course is forwarded to the campus Articulation Officer, who will submit the course outline to department/division chairs at both DVC and LMC for intra-district articulation.
All new courses must go through the intra-district articulation process. A course match is not required, but the process is! The District BOG will not approve a course (needed before the course can be offered) unless the intra-district
    articulation process has been completed.
If course matches a course offered at DVC or LMC, it will be assigned a Local Articulation Number (LAN), to be included in the course's catalog description.
    9. Approved course is forwarded to District Board of Governors.
    10. Once a course is approved by District Board of Governors:
    a) Any new COLLEGE-LEVEL course is automatically transferable to most four-year institutions (such as CSU) as an
elective. If it fits within a GE category, it will be listed in the appropriate spot in CCC's catalog for the campus requirement for graduation.
    b) A new course that is an elective, or part of an existing program major will be listed as such in the next catalog.
    c) A new course planned as transfer GE, or part of a transfer major will be articulated with CSU, UC (all), UC (Berkeley), and IGETC by the campus Articulation Officer.Upon receipt of articulation approval, course will be added to appropriate list in college catalog.
    d) A new course that is part of a new program major will be sent to the State Chancellor's Office for approval.Upon receipt of this approval, new course/program will be listed in the college catalog.
